The Adventure of the Devil's Foot
Due to excessive hard work, Holmes' health was getting worse. In an early spring, he decided to take a complete rest with Watson based on his doctor's constant advice. They chose a small cottage near Poldhu Bay, surrounded by moors. Holmes made an acquaintance of a vicar of the parish and came to know Mr. Mortimer Tregennis via the vicar. Mr. Tregennis was a lodger of the vicar. He was a single man, wearing a pair of glasses, with a little physical deformity.
One day, the vicar and Mr. Tregennis unexpectedly came to see Holmes and Watson as they were going to take a walk upon the moors.
"Mr. Holmes," said the vicar, Mr. Tregennis played cards last night with his two brothers and his sister at their house. They were all in high spirits and enjoyed it. At about ten o'clock, Mr. Tregennis left them and went home to sleep. This morning it was heard that a disastrous murder happened at the place. When he arrived there, he found his sister was seated round the table exactly as he had left her. She lay stone-dead in her chair while his brothers both grew mad. The cards still spread in front of them on the table. And the candles burned down to their sockets. They all were wearing an expression of the utmost horror on their faces.
